Coffee Story
After 15 years of working as a coffee producer, Emmanuel Rusatira and his family decided to build their washing stations in East Africa with a commitment to quality, traceability and sustainability. The Humure station, named after the highest hill in the area, was built in 2017 and is the largest in the Baho Coffee Network, which collects coffee cherries from over 1,500 farmers in the surrounding area and employs over 200 people at its peak.
As with all his mills, Emmanuel pays farmers prices for cherries that can be up to 80% over the national farmgate price set in Rwanda, to incentivize producers to choose this station. This specific lot is a naturally processed Red Bourbon variety grown by 14 smallholders on the Remera Hill and processed at the Humure Washing Station in the Remera Sector, Gatsibo District, Eastern Province of Rwanda.

The Remera Hill group comprises farmers in a geographically similar area near Humure in the Remera district. They were all approached because there was a belief that this hill could be a specifically strong microclimate for producing quality coffee, and it was explained to them that if they would all coordinate to deliver their cherries together, their lot could be separated so that it could be traced back to them and lead to a better recognition of their work internationally.
